RWB x CITR (Child in the Rough - Kenya)

Relief Without Borders is excited to announce the establishment of a new partnership with a start-up nonprofit, Child in the Rough (CITR). The most pressing humanitarian crisis in Kenya is food insecurity and child malnourishment from the ongoing drought disaster. In January of 2022, RWB made a donation to CITR that went towards food, textbooks, uniforms, and curriculum design for 300 children at the Star of Wonder School located in Nairobi, Kenya.

The Star of Wonder School is a volunteer based safe haven and source of hope for children in some of the most brutal and poverty-stricken areas of the world, two of which are the Ngando and Kibera Slums. Many of the children are orphans and exposed to extremely harsh conditions, facing starvation and exposure to disease at a young age. The Star of Wonder School not only grants access to affordable education, but takes these children off the street, providing meals and care for healthier and happier futures.

The founder, director, and local volunteers were born in Kibera or Ngando themselves, but with their understanding of the community’s struggles and love for their people, they dedicate their lives to helping those in the most vulnerable situations. What began with 15 students has transformed into 300, including the school’s relocation and expansion coincided with goals to prevent hunger and improve hygiene through building an on-site kitchen and implementing workable restrooms. Funding these, in addition to other urgent necessities as byproducts of the persevering drought, was made possible through generous donations when Star of Wonder was at risk of permanent shut down due to COVID 19, as well as the continuous efforts of organizations such as RWB, committed to providing aid and educational opportunities while sharing the stories of people along the way.
